Help with the New Year/Holiday Blues

It is not uncommon to hear the unfortunate, but true stat that the holidays tend to be amongst the saddest time of year for many people. The thing is, that sadness does not always go away once the holidays are over. For many, it lingers and shows up in our everyday lives and can even affect the people we love.

At lola’s, yes we are a skincare company. However, we firmly believe that skincare is self-care, and you cannot talk about self-care without talking about mental health. Though we are not mental health professionals, we want to offer you a few tips that may help you get out of a holiday slump and lift your spirits. Let’s dive in!

Here are 4 tips to help lift your spirits during what can be a difficult time of year for some!

  1. Exercise
Whether you go for a walk, run, or knock out a quick YouTube workout in your living room; moving your body can help lift your spirits. When we exercise, our body releases endorphins- which are the chemicals our bodies release that are responsible for our feelings of happiness. If you are able, try to make this a routine or something you do daily. You will notice over time that you will begin to feel better both mentally and physically! Talk about a 2-for-one!

  2. Eat
Many times when we are feeling down, we choose not to eat or sometimes we overeat the foods our bodies hate the most. Did you know there are foods that are proven to help lift your mood? Foods like dark chocolate, bananas, berries, nuts and seeds have been proven scientifically to lift our moods. Healthline has a detailed article on it HERE.
So, let’s drop the ice cream (for now ;) ) and pick up some berries. There are even some great ice cream recipes out there that use bananas for the base! Yum!

  3. Do Something for Yourself
Whether you go get your hair done, get a manicure or commit to your skincare routine- doing something for yourself can help to lift your spirits. Practicing self-care related activities can help to boost your mental health and sense of well-being. We have an entire blog on this here. You can also check out this article from the National Institute of Mental Health. It covers in detail how self-care can help to lift your mood.

  4. Seek a Mental Health Professional
Sometimes no matter what we do, there seems to be nothing that can help to lift our spirits. If it seems like nothing is working, it’s a great idea to seek help from a professional. If you are unable to afford traditional therapy, there are great apps such as TalkSpace and BetterHelp that offer access to therapy at affordable rates.

We at team lola care about you and we want you to know it is important to place your mental health as priority. We hope these tips, or at least one of them helps you if you are experiencing sadness or depression during this season. Sometimes the New Year doesn’t feel new, and that is okay. We encourage you to take the steps you need to be able to show up as the best version of yourself. You deserve it!
